Benjamin Franklin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Benjamin Franklin - Essay Example Benjamin writes about 13 virtues in his autobiography which he wants to make part of his life one by one. Franklin wanted to seek God’s assistance for wisdom. He considered God, the fountain of wisdom. He was considered the wisest man on American soil due to his clear mind and right approach towards life. In the early days of America, Benjamin knew that very few Americans have access to books. One reason was that books were very costly and rare and secondly there were no public libraries for the Americans in 1730. Men of middle status were also unable to get books for reading. Only the rich and clergy could afford expensive books in abundance. Franklin tried to gather some books in a little room of Mc Grace which could be later consulted for different jobs. They gathered the books but after one year every member took his books back due to less care of books (FRANKLIN, Chapter 8). Then Benjamin made a plan to construct subscription library in Philadelphia. With the help of his friends, Benjamin started collection of subscriptions in Junto. Initially 50 subscribers paid 40 shillings each to start the public library. Subscribers also promised to give additional 10 shillings for maintenance of the library (FRANKLIN, Chapter 8). Benjamin’s publications got fame due to format and material. He showed his democratic spirit with the help of his publications. He got a lot of lead and understanding from a fiction â€Å"poor Richard†. Now with this fiction Benjamin started motivating people on politics and philosophy (FRANKLIN, Chapter 10). Benjamin laid emphasis on moral protection and wished to live without committing any fault in his life. Benjamin writes about 13 virtues in his autobiography which he wants to make part of his life one by one. He knows that it is difficult to implement all of them simultaneously. He preferred â€Å"Temperance† as a first virtue because it

A real story happened in my life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

A real story happened in my life - Essay Example This essay explores how an opportunity to study in the US changed my life and gave me an opportunity to give back to society back at home. I was born in the outskirts of the beautiful city of Valparaiso that is known to Chile’s business and tourist hub. At this time, times got tough and my parents had to move in the city in search for better paying jobs and improved quality of life for my siblings and I. My parents did their best to give the best education for my siblings and I. My education experience in Chile was difficult as anticipated. I can confidently say that I wasted three years of my life going round in circles. When I was two years old, I enrolled in a special class for students with disabilities. Although this class was meant to form a solid foundation for my education, it turned out to be a huge disappointment to my parents, as I could not read a single word in Braille. I spent two years in regular kindergarten and one and a half years in first grade. My education was not getting any better and the oral lessons offered were of no use to me. My parents started looking for ways for me to access the kind of education I needed. We got a few rejections but eventually, the Arkansas school for the blind accepted my application. This was the first time I was away from my family and friends and I felt so lonely and scared. I had seen my parents try their best to give me a better education and was not going to disappoint them in any way. At the time I enrolled in the school, there were a few international students and we were treated better than the natives were (Isibor 73). The institution had excellent facilities for study and play and I felt that life had given me the chance to discover my talents and be an inspiration to children in Chile. As other children played during recess, I sat alone on the bench. The teachers were concerned and often encouraged me to join my peers in play. There has been a constant increase in the number of foreign student s seeking to pursue education in the US and this trend is likely to increase in future as shown in the graph below. Changes in the U. S. Population (U.S. Department of Labor) When I first came to the institution, I had to learn and adjust to new experiences. My former education experience was oral and I thought this would continue. In my first year, I learnt to write and read Braille. The teacher in charge was stern and firm and I quickly adjusted to her teaching style. She taught me some of the most valuable lessons that I have applied to date. I had not interacted with children from ethnic and cultural backgrounds and this opportunity enabled me to interact with them (Isibor 74). It also gave me the chance to make new friends away from home. I had never given much thought to being able to move around and carry out my routine activities independently. At the end of my first week in the institution, I was assigned a mobility instructor and I was presented my first cane after complet ing my first mobility test. The mobility instructors taught me on how to move around independently. Over time, my mobility skills improved immensely as I could walk around the school alone and handle activities including play better. My teacher helped me draft letters to my parents who were amazed at my progress and this encouraged me to be better every day. The greatest disappointment occurred during the holidays when the school social worker notified me that I would not be going home, as my parents could not

The level of deficit spending by the federal government Personal Statement

The level of deficit spending by the federal government - Personal Statement Example I think the government should cut its spending for this to be achieved in a manner that everyone will be satisfied. In respecct of raising taxes, the wealthy have come out strongly in opposition. They argue that they already are overtaxed. According to Porter (12), it is true that the high income earners in the States pay a lot of tax. They are said to be account for the biggest share of the tax burden. It is noted that the deficit in the federal government has been an extraordinarily contentious issue in the political scene over the last few years. It is stated that the current deficit stands at about $15 trillion dollars. It is expected that if every thing holds constant; the figure will rise significantly in the next couple of years (Jeffrey par 2). Some politicians and economists argue that the national income levels are not on the dangerous levels yet. They say that the government should increase its expenses in order to avoid another downturn. The current deficit is said to be a result of high spending on soldiers, grants to support the public schools, road construction, infrastructural projects, and Medicare for seniors (Hubpages par 4). Another factor that has also brought about the deficit relates to government revenue as previously indicated. Revenue is the amount of money collected by the government. They are generally gotten from tax, custom duties, and sale of government property among other sources (Porter 12). For the government to be able to reduce the deficit, it should first be able to reduce the amount of money that it spends on government-sponsored programs or increase the amount of money it takes from tax. Jeffrey (par 2) suggests that, not only does the government raise more revenue when it raises tax paid by the rich Americans but it could achieve this without slowing down economic growth of the country. Porter (12) states that

Online Application Ning - the Platform Allowing Users to Create and Cl Coursework

Online Application Ning - the Platform Allowing Users to Create and Close Their Own Social Network - Coursework Example This critical analysis functions to examine the role of social networking with a variety of diverse populations, arguing that the widespread social adoption of this technology has not simply been a tool to achieve greater efficiency, but is in actuality reshaping and formatting the nature of human culture and consciousness.A television program recently had a comedic skit where the internet went out in a home and the residents had to resort to a box-labeled ‘pre-internet’ – inside the box were a rubber duck, a barbell, and a fake plastic tree. While most of us recognize that there was a lot more going on in pre-internet times than a box full of trinkets, the absurdity of the skit draws one's attention to the fact that one of the great divides of culture, arguably on the scale of the Protestant Reformation, the Industrial Revolution, or even the Renaissance, is the contemporary occurrence of what has been deemed the Digital Age. Having died in 1980 Marshall McLuhan had only glimpsed its genesis when he proclaimed, â€Å"In this electronic age we see ourselves being translated more and more into the form of information, moving toward the technological extension of consciousness (McLuhan 1967).†With the explosion of Web 2.0 software and the use of social networking sites (SNS), it was certain that professional environments would begin to incorporate the technology. While previous conceptions of computer-mediated communication – video gaming, Facebook use, YouTube – have been characterized as detrimental, the technology is now being reconsidered for its functional value. Many varied corporations have implemented collaborative technology, including Google whose employees hold daily meetings with associates spread throughout the world. One of the most widespread uses of collaborative technology has occurred in education environments. Indeed, certain researchers even argue that this technology is expanding the very nature of the classroom room outside institutional walls.   Â
