Traditional Résumé The first résumé is no surprise.   You could refer to this as your “traditional” résumé and everyone applying probably has had a working résumé for some time.   A traditional résumé includes, but is not limited to, information such as: Positions held (employment and internships) Academic degrees and other academic achievements Volunteer, public service, political work completed Memberships in honorary societies and awards for service or leadership Extracurricular activities and particularly if an MIA applicant â€" foreign travel undertaken, including purpose and length of stay. As has always been the case, with this traditional résumé we do not recommend trying to keep it to a single page in length.   A one page résumé is more aligned with applying for a job.   This résumé is for graduate school consideration and the Committee encourages applicants to list all relevant information and to not use a small font or extended margins in an attempt to cram a great deal of information into a very small space.   A typical résumé in this format submitted to SIPA is three to four pages in length. Put another way we like white space.   Committee members have to read several hundred applications and small fonts and cramped formats are very difficult on the eyes.   When it doubt, use 12 point font and normal margins the Committee will thank you for it. Quantitative/Language Résumé The second résumé will focus exclusively on an applicant’s background with quantitative methods and language learning/ability. Quantitative Methods The core curriculum at SIPA includes required coursework in economics, statistics, and financial management.   The Committee is therefore quite interested in the quantitative aptitude of applicants to our program.   This most typically includes coursework and/or professional experience related to mathematics, statistics, and economics.   Also of note   can be quantitative experience as it pertains to areas such as science or engineering. Unfortunately, academic transcripts rarely provide in depth descriptions of the actual content of coursework completed.   For example, a class labeled as “Principles of Economics” on a transcript provides little detail on how much focus was placed on the use of quantitative methods.   And with the large number of international applicants to SIPA, often times transcripts translated into English will just list a class as “Mathematics” thus giving the Committee little information on the actual content/level of math studied. Providing the opportunity for applicants to list detailed information pertaining to quantitative preparation/experience will allow for better explanations of past academic and professional experience.   The goal is to be able to allow applicants to list full descriptions of courses included in a course catalog or in the syllabus used in a class. Language Learning/Ability Proficiency in a second language is a graduation requirement of the MIA program but is not a requirement of the MPA program.   Proficiency is defined as the ability to use a second language at an intermediate level.   Academically this is defined as the ability to achieve a grade of “B” or better in an intermediate level 2 language course. Incoming   MIA students who speak English as a native language will be tested in a second language of their choice upon entering into the program.   Due to the intensity of the MIA program at SIPA, it would be quite difficult for an applicant with no previous language study to achieve intermediate level proficiency in two years of study.   The Committee therefore wishes to see at least elementary level proficiency in a second language when evaluating an MIA applicant for admission. If an incoming native English speaker passes the proficiency exam administered shortly after beginning the program, no additional language study is required.   If the grade achieved on the exam is not sufficient, to prove proficiency a grade of “B” or better must be achieved in an intermediate level 2 language course during the time at SIPA in order to graduate. For MPA students that speak English as a native language, second language learning is optional so it is not required to include language learning information in the second résumé.   However, if an MPA applicant does have experience in a second language we encourage them to provide this information because it provides us with additional information on your background.   Please do note that there is one exception to the language requirement for the MPA program.   If an MPA applicant chooses the Economic and Political Development concentration, second language proficiency is a requirement just like in the MIA program. For applicants that do not speak English as a native language, the second résumé will provide an opportunity to elaborate further on time spent studying English and other languages.   This can of course include academic study but can also include additional information not included in transcripts or test scores such as time spent living in English speaking environments. Details on Quantitative/Language Learning The second résumé is meant to provide applicants with the ability to provide detailed information which can include: Name/level/grade/institution pertaining to classroom courses. For classroom courses, a description of the course and specific learning objectives (best done by providing a description from a course catalog or a syllabus that was used for the class). Examples of working knowledge of the subject matter as demonstrated in academic or professional settings. Tests taken and grades/scores achieved. Specific certificates earned. In the case of second language learning, the following information is useful: Information on time spent in a foreign country where the language is spoken.   Or, if the second language was spoken in your home country please provide the context (i.e. did you grow up in a home where a second language was spoken but your academic training was in another language?). Details regarding professional/volunteer/personal use of the language. Specific details/examples regarding writing, reading, speaking, and listening ability. One question you might have is, “If the course is listed on my transcripts or noted in another part of my application, is it necessary to include it in the Quantitative/Language   résumé?” The answer is yes.   It is okay to be redundant or to include the same information that might be listed in another part of the application in this section.   Seeing the information twice, but in more detailed format in the   résumé portion, is what the Committee is seeking to achieve. You can view samples of this résumé by clicking here.   Do note that the sample is only a guide.   The level of detail you wish to include is entirely up to you. If you have been out of school for a while, do not feel compelled to spend hours and hours trying to search for old syllabus or text book titles/authors.   The point of the résumé is not to put you through some sort of time trial, it is meant to provide information on the core learning from the course/experience.   The example résumé was borrowed from an applicant that applied to SIPA while still in college, and it meant to only be a sample.   Simply provide as much information as you can and you will be fine.

Is Jesus Real - Free Essay Example

And Jesus said to him, ?I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (Holy Bible Book of John). This statement is from John 14:6 where Jesus is saying that He is the only way to God and how to live your life. Jesus exclaimed this because He wanted His followers to know why He was put on this Earth. Most people today need proof or evidence that they comprehend to validate their viewpoint on Jesus. This includes even outside eyewitnesses of Jesus such as Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian. While the world holds many opinions of Jesus, people still ignore the signs because of their pride and what society tells them to believe. While one of the biggest arguments between Christians and unbelievers is if Jesus was real, the proof of Him can be found in the New Testament books. These accounts from the New Testament were written shortly after Jesus death. However, some people believe that they were written actually 100- 200 years later. To these people, this means the New Testament cant be considered as evidence for they were written much later which would lead to a folk tales versus historical reality (Slick 2). This point of view becomes problematic because Acts was written after Luke, who also wrote Acts (Slick 2). The book of Luke was written after Matthew, which was written down before Mark (Slick 2). Most scholars conclude that that information is correct. From this evidence, people are able to know that Acts was recorded after those books. Since that is true, the exact date cannot be determined, but internal evidence shows it to be between 62 and 70 A.D (Slick 3). This renders support fo r the argument that Jesus was a real historical person. Evidence for Jesus to be real does not just come from the Bible and its historical evidence. Flavius Josephus, a famous Jewish historian, recorded Jesus life down in his manuscripts (GotQuestions 4). One example of this is when he wrote about James, Jesus brother, in his Antiquities. He said, At this time there was a wise man named Jesus. His conduct was good, and he was known to be virtuous. And many people from among the Jews and the other nations became his disciples (GotQuestions 4). If a person were to say that Jesus is not real because the Bible is incorrect, then they would be wrong because not only does the Bible write about Jesus, but a Jewish historian does as well. Documentation from Flavius Josephus gives great support to the argument that Jesus was a real person. In the next proof of Jesus being real, it comes straight from the Bible in 1 Corinthians 15. At the start of the chapter, he explains how he went to that place in person and preached to people orally, which happened around 51-52 A.D (Habermas 11). In verse 3, Paul writes that what he had received was about Christ dying on the cross for all peoples sins (Habermas 11). This is a man who knew the other Apostles and preaches the gospel that they agreed on from Jesus. Since he was connected to the main stream of Christian believers, Pauls teachings represent a Christian tradition that transpires from the central support of Christians (Habermas 11). Most scholars agree that Paul is to be taken serious because there is so much historical evidence of him. Being a person with plenty of historical evidence who wrote about Jesus, Paul leads the affirmation of Jesus existence and reveals further proof of Him. While many recognize that Jesus is real, there are quite a few who do not believe Jesus to have been real. One viewpoint is that the gospels contradict each other. These people demonstrate that Mark is the earliest existing document of Jesus life and teachings, while Luke and Matthew added on different corrections to that book to create their books (Tarico 10). They are right that four gospels are similar, but they dont understand that they were all portraying Jesus teachings from their viewpoint of how it happened. In another example of an opinion against Jesus being real, they believe that the New Testament gospels werent even written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (Tarico 9). For these people, the reason why the gospels werent written by their names is because they were believed to have been written in the second century. This makes it too improbable for the disciples to have been alive to scribe the stories about Jesus (Tarico 9). Evidence to oppose this proposition is easily found from Paul where he talks about his teachings coming from witnesses and Jesus himself. Some of these witnesses were indeed the disciples. These disciples were eyewitnesses to the events that took place during Jesus travels. In todays society and culture, people can be handed pure evidence of something, and still turn away from the truth because of what other peoples opinions have told them to be true. When Jesus said to everyone that He is truth and the way, He doesnt need to be believed from evidence. His Word alone is enough for all people to understand and listen to Him. Even if a person wanted to find ways to deny Jesus, they would be hit with several facts that support Jesus. In everyones soul, there is something that is missing, and that something is Jesus Christ.

The right to bear arms has been fused together with American culture for hundreds of years. Comparison of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby and...

The short story of â€Å"Winter Dreams† was written around the same time that Fitzgerald was developing ideas for a story to turn into a novel. While The Great Gatsby wasn’t published until 1925, â€Å"Winter Dreams† dà ©buted in 1922 and the similarities between the novel and short story were done on purpose. â€Å"Winter Dreams† became a short draft which Fitzgerald paralleled The Great Gatsby after, but also differentiated the two in specific ways (â€Å"Winter Dreams† 217). The main characters are both men, Jay Gatsby and Dexter Green, who desire for the American dream, not necessarily for themselves, but in order to lure back the women they idealize. Jay Gatsby, as Daisy later finds out made his fortune though illegal activities such as bootleg operations and therefore this discredits his character. Meanwhile, Dexter attends a prominent university and then becomes an entrepreneur, making his fortune by honest hard work. While they both dream of the woman they idealize, Dexter is not as obsessed with Judy as Jay is with Daisy. Gatsby makes it his mission in life to alter who he is on the inside and outside in order to compel Daisy to be with him. He changes his name and creates this mysterious persona. In an inclusive setting disabled children are exposed to the unwritten rules of society, where touching another appropriately or inappropriately may be overlooked in a self-contained class, it would not be overlooked in an inclusive class. They are also held to the same social standards as the general population of the school and therefore face the same disciplinary actions. Most disabled children have sensory issues that typical children do not for example loud noises can lead to a meltdown. In an inclusive setting disabled children are exposed to more noise and people than is found in a self-contained classroom but in a controlled environment which helps to facilitate the ability to cope with loud noises and crowds. Learning appropriate social skills is a difficult, if not impossible, task in a self-contained classroom. However, with professionally trained teachers and the right supports they can not only learn social skills from teachers but also from their non-disabled peers. Learning social skills sets ups a disabled child for success during his/her academic career as well as in life after school. In How Young Children Evaluate People With and Without Disabilities, Huckstadt and Shutts state that One in six children in the United States has a developmental disability and most students with disabilities attend schools with typically developing peers. When disabled children spend their school day in a self-contained class room, they are cut off from the general student population which leads to feeling that they do not belong. According to sociometric studies typical children tend to choose other typical children over disabled children, (Huckstadt and Shutts). The need to belong or to be accepted is a basic human need without which our selfâ€Å"esteem suffers. Social exclusion and bullying have obvious negative impacts on the targets of those behaviors, but biased attitudes and behaviors also deny typically developing children the opportunity to develop close relationships with diverse individuals, (Huckstadt and Shutts). When disabled students are cut off from the student po pulation, typical students are more likely to view them as being different or strange which can lead to bullying. According to Pacers National Bullying Prevention Center 60% of disabled students in comparison to 25% of all students report being bullied regularly. While suicide cannot be tied directly to bullying, it does put adolescents at more of a risk. Children with low self-esteem may believe theyre not worthy of good treatment (Bob Cunningham). A child with low self-esteem may face challenges such as repeated failure leading to feeling of frustration, anger, anxiety, and sadness; losing interest in learning, loss of friendships, be withdrawn, and use self-defeating ways of dealing with stress. Not surprisingly, when social interactions are fostered and peer acceptance of increases, all students show improvements in social skills and self-esteem, transition and communication skills, and language and cognitive development (Kulusic). In an inclusive classroom with caring adults w ho monitor bullying, disabled children have the tools to improve their self-esteem. Attributes of others that are encountered for the first time (e.g., beards or glasses) may initially be confusing or frightening. Not surprisingly, young children conceptualise disability predominantly with respect to physical appearance and they may respond negatively to peers who appear physically different, (Gilmore and Howard). Typical children are not usually exposed to disabled persons prior to entering school, as a result they have not learned to accept disability. Childrens attitudes tend to be more negative towards peers with disabilities than towards typically developing children (Lindsey and al). However, typical children can be taught to accept disabled children with the help of a caring adult. A disabled child in the class gives opportunity to instruct children about social difference and tolerance of people that are different. Learning to accept difference is critical because everyone is unique and eventually they will work in a world of people who are different. Inclus ive education in neighbourhood schools allows students to meet other neighbourhood children and youth, which can lead to friendships outside of school hours (Kulusic). Also, learning about disabled people leads into learning how to interact with them for example using sign language or a speech device as a means of communication. Interaction between disabled children and their typical peers leads into supporting each other. An example of that support would be an autistic child being the motivator for the football team and the football team being the protector of the autistic child. In conclusion, inclusive teaching benefits not the disabled child but the typical child as well. It is critical for children to learn acceptance at an early age and inclusive teaching if done right carries out that goal. Just including disabled children in classrooms with typically developing children, however is not enough. Children and young people without disabilities have reported that being with those who have disabilities has improved their self-concept, increased their social awareness and acceptances of others, reduced their fear of human differences, and helped them develop personal principles and friendships (Kulusic). Admittedly there are some situations of disability that warrant self-contained classrooms, but those are very rare. Most disabled children would be better served in an inclusive class with pull-outs or resource for more intense instruction. According to the IDEAs LRE or mainstreaming policy, school districts are required to educate students with disabilities in regular classrooms with their nondisabled peers, in the school they would attend if not disabled, to the maximum extent appropriate (Wrightslaw Least Restrictive Environment/Inclusion Index Page). Self-contained classrooms are usually social isolated from the general student body and sometimes physically isolated as well. In Taking a Closer Look at the Impact of Classroom Placement: Students Share Their Perspective from Inside Special Education Classrooms, a study done in middle and high schools, Jones and Hensley describe transportation for special education students as arriving and departing on special education buses and using a separate entrance thus physically isolating this population. Based on observation and experience in the local school system, children in self-contained classrooms are isolated from the general student population approximately 85-90% of the day. For purposes of their study, Jones and Hensley, used terms self-contained classrooms and resources rooms, also known in other districts as life skills or inclusive respectively. We were interested in exploring the differences between students in resource rooms and students in self-contained classrooms regard ing their self-determination and relationships with classmates and teachers, (Jones and Hensley). The findings of the study by Jones and Hensley were that students in resource rooms felt better about all four factors (autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment, and self-realization) of self-determination than did the students in self-contained classrooms. Students in self-contained classrooms felt that their classmates were more supportive than students in resource rooms did, (Jones and Hensley). Also, of interest, teachers in self-contained classrooms indicated that students were overly dependent on them, (Jones and Hensley). Jones and Hensley recommend giving students in self-contained classrooms more access to the general student during naturally occurring opportunities such as in middle and high schools the changing of classes, lunch, and clubs sponsored by the school. The opportunity to socialize with the general student body does not mean just taking the disabled students to the lunch room, however. Students need to mingle with and converse with the general student body. To build self-determination, it is imperative that disabled students have opportunity to make choices about their school day and have access to positive relationships to positive role models that exhibit self-determined behaviors. Students with special needs should also have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. All students regardless of disability can participate in some way with clubs, activities, and/or extracurricular activities, e.g. a disabled student may not be able to play football but possibly could be the team manager. The task of integrating disabled children into an inclusive environment is daunting, but not integrating denies them the opportunity to become independent members of society. Denying children in self-contained classrooms the opportunity to socialize with typical students as much as possible is not only illegal but is discrimination. Just as segregation of African Americans was discrimination so is segregation of disabled children. By not integrating disabled children into mainstream(inclusive) education to the fullest extent possible, they are being discriminated against.
